for New Car Buyers
This is how site manager would approach the purchase of a new
car.
Step 1. I would select a manufacturer whose motor vehicle
models are consistently of high reliability. If you choose a model from an auto
manufacturer with one or two, or so, reliable models, it would seem prudent to assume
that the manufacturer's dealerships' service departments will be so accustomed
to problem after problem and complaint after complaint that any problem you
might have may be greeted with a head scratch and the query, "This is a problem?"

Step 2. I would focus first on the long term reliability
of a model. The question is, "How reliable is a model after the first 6
years?" The reason for this focus is that I would want some indication that
the vehicle will be pleasant to drive after the first 3,000 to 6,000
miles.
By taking this approach, you may also be pleasantly surprised.
It was my approach in 1984, and although I had no thought of owning my new 1984
Corolla liftback for more than 4 years, I still do and still regard it as one of
the great pleasures of life.
If the model lacks a long term reliability history, I would
examine the long term history of the closest model of the same manufacturer.

Step 3. If you have been an owner of a made in Japan
Toyota or Lexus, I would stick with a made in Japan Toyota or Lexus.
Check paragraph 1 of Cautionary Remarks.
Step 4. If you are thinking about purchasing a Saturn, think twice.
Check paragraphs 2 and 3 of Cautionary Remarks.
Also check out the Comfort/Noise, Safety, and Reliability sections of VMR's Saturn:
91-95, which has a great gift for the understatement and will offend no
one.
Step 5. I would examine the following:
a. National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration's Consumer
Complaints Database.
b. More recent reliability data. Examining
data depicting reliability for more recent years is valuable for assuring that
there are likely no or few unpleasant surprises in the offing.
c. The features available.
d. The criticisms that Consumer Reports
makes of the model. While the criticisms may or may not be applicable to your
intended use, they are good to know in advance.

issue,
ii. The most recent Consumer Reports
Buying Guide,
iii. The most recent Consumer Reports Used
Car Buying Guide, and
iv. The most recent Consumer Reports New
Car Buying Guide.
Most of these will likely be available at your local library.
New car buyers
should also check Section 10 on page 19 of
the 2001 Auto Review, so that they know that they have to stay on their
toes.
Step 6. I would check out the model at the nearest
dealership in order to answer questions such as: Does the model offer the
roominess, quietness, comfort, pleasantness, and ease of entry and exit that I
am looking for? Is it a vehicle that is pleasing to the eye and that I will
enjoy driving two or more years hence?
