Description: This search engine is likely the best for searching automotive related topics, by a very big margin. Site manager estimates that the Exalead search engine is presently 30 to 35 times better than Google, but is only 8% as good as Google was prior to the advent of large expenditures on internet advertising by the major automobile manufacturers. Description: This search engine is part of one of the oldest and strongest information and entertainment websites on the internet. Its news section is very good. By acquisition, the Yahoo search engine has several names and formats, including Alta Vista, Overture, and All the Web. Site manager estimates that the Yahoo search engine is presently 15 to 20 times better than Google, but is only 7% as good as Google was prior to the advent of large expenditures on internet advertising by the major automobile manufacturers. Description: This search engine is another name Ask Jeeves. Site manager estimates that the Ask search engine is presently 5 to 10 times better than Google, but is only 6% as good as Google was prior to the advent of large expenditures on internet advertising by the major automobile manufacturers. Description: This is a metasearch engine that scans 14 search engines for results. Description: DMOZ, also known as the Open Directory Project (ODP), is the World Wide Web's directory, upon which nearly all other directories on the web are based.  DMOZ is the product of thousands of volunteers who select out the better sites that the web has to offer. Its search engine helps one to locate quickly possibly applicable websites within the directory. Description: This is a metasearch engine that scans 9 search engines for results and presents results with ratings and in clusters. Description: This search engine is currently the most used.
Strengths: It has few sponsored advertisements, so search results listings are likely to be much less influenced by major commercial enterprises. Strengths: Generally, it does a good job of placing the dominant information provider near the top of the first results page, for both very general enquiries and very specific enquiries. Strengths: Generally, it does a good job of placing the dominant information provider near the top of the first results page, for both very general enquiries and very specific enquiries. Strengths: Currently (2007/12/01), it does a pretty good job of placing the dominant information provider near the top. Strengths: Its search engine is restricted to sites within its directory; consequently, there is an assurance of greater quality than the mean of what a search engine offers within the first 10 results of a phrase search. Also, it is likely a sound practice to check every website to see whether it has earned an award from the DMOZ directory. Strengths: The clusters seem very useful for quickly identifying the dominant information provider. (At last check on 2007/12/01, the clusters were not available.) Also, this metasearch engine does (or rather did) a very good job of shedding the 75+% fill that appears in every search engine's first couple of pages. Strengths: Currency of newly added pages is measured in days.
Weaknesses: It lacks the excellent discriminating page selection that Google had prior to large automobile-manufacturer expenditures on internet advertising. Weaknesses: Currency of newly added pages is measured in weeks, not days. Weaknesses: Currency of newly added pages is measured in weeks, not days. Weaknesses: Currency is that of the search engines it taps. Weaknesses: It does not search the sites for keywords, but rather attaches a small number of keywords to each site listed. Consequently, as a general rule, only the broadest of search phrases should be used. Weaknesses: Currency is that of the search engines it taps. Weaknesses: The ranking of a website and the page ranking accorded its web pages may vary dramatically over time, possibly as the result of the wishes of one or more large advertisers. A web page of a dominant information provider may not appear in the first 1,000 entries, maybe 10,000 entries, of an applicable phrase search, again possibly as the result of the wishes of one or more large advertisers. A significant part of a website may be omitted from applicable phrase-search results listings. The web page appearing in a phrase-search results listing may not be the website's most pertinent, or even the fifth or sixth most pertinent.
Comments: (1) The power that this web page offers the user is that the dominant information provider for the subject searched should be found within the first four entries of the first results page of at least one of the above, and often several of the above. By contrast, Google, currently the most popular search engine, will often provide the dominant information provider within the first 100 results pages for a given search phrase, but where within the first 100 pages - 1,000 entries - is very difficult to say. With regard to MSN's new go-it-alone search engine, there may not be even a useful result - leading information provider on the topic - to be found within any reasonable number of pages. The sample auto-related searches will help users who are familiar with this site to gage the accuracy of the results pages, i.e., how directly the search engine takes the visitor to the pages containing the most pertinent information. Those who use the internet primarily for information acquisition may wish to make this page their home page. (2) A metasearch engine is a search engine that searches the results of other search engines and then lists a relatively small number of results based on the first few results on the search engines checked. (3) Graphics searches are the best means for identifying information-rich sites (dominant information providers), as breadth or depth of information requires (or at the very least is enhanced by) a presentation in a chart or table.

Comments: The Ixquick Metasearch engine searches the results of most of the above search engines. It is an excellent way to begin a search, do a preliminary search, or do a search under extreme time constraints. Also, the current graphics search results of Ixquick may be the best there is. However, it has its limitations. Firstly, if the dominant information provider, for the subject searched, is found on the first page of only one of the above search engines, it may not be listed in Ixquick's results or may be listed on the fourth or fifth page of results. And the chances of finding the dominant information provider if it makes only the second or third page of one or more of the above search engines is poor. Secondly, and consequently, new sites and new pages of existing sites will be picked up rather slowly. Thirdly, access may be difficult at times of peak use.
