	AutoOnInfo.net  April 2008 As Ford's Short-Term Reliability Improves and Warranty Work Declines, Ford Dealers Struggle to Make a Buck, But Warranty-Work Reduction is Not a Significant Problem at GM and Chrysler Dealers: Putting a Brake on Dealer Insolvency? Bleeker The Detroit News reports that the short-term reliability improvements that Ford Motor Company has been able to achieve is cutting into warranty-work earnings of its dealerships and may threaten the financial viability of some of its dealerships. Michael Kennedy, who owns four Ford dealerships in the Philadelphia area, is quoted by Detroit News as saying, "And [the reduction in warranty work] could push some of the smaller dealers over the edge." The Detroit News reports that the dealerships of General Motors Corporation have experienced "some decline" in warranty work and that Chrysler LLC stated that warranty-work reduction is "not a major issue." The reported reduction in warranty work for Ford dealerships is well reflected in the computed short-term reliability attainments of its products, as the following chart helps depict. One disquieting fact for Ford dealers that can be gleaned from the above chart, if Mr. Kennedy's reported assessment is correct, is that should the cars and trucks of Ford Motor Company ever attain a short-term reliability anywhere close to that of Toyota Motor Corporation's vehicles or Honda Motor Company's vehicles, quite a number of Ford dealers, small and otherwise, may be going belly-up.
