GM Expands Lead on CR's Used-Cars-to-Avoid List, Sets Record Share for Recent Years

By James B. Bleeker

Models by General Motors Corporation account for 41.4% of the entries on Consumer Reports' 2008 Used-Cars-To-Avoid list for model years 1998 to 2007. GM's share is more than double the second largest share, held by Chrysler LLC, formerly the Chrysler Group of DaimlerChrysler AG. Chrysler's share is 16.5%. Ford Motor Company is third, with 13.8% of the entries on the list.

The following chart depicts each manufacturer's share of this ignominious list. General Motors' share includes its Saab line (a rather insignificant contribution - 1.8 percentage points of its share), Ford's share includes its Jaguar, Land Rover, and Volvo lines (a much greater contribution - 5.4 percentage points of its share), and BMW's share includes its Mini line (a quite insignificant contribution - 0.1 percentage points of its share).

The Reliable Two have 7 entries on this list. Honda Motors Company's entries are its 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002 Honda Passports, rebadged products by Isuzu Motors Ltd., then an affiliate of General Motors Corporation. (Once Honda engineered its own SUVs, it dropped the Passport.) Toyota Motor Corporation's entries are its 2007 6-cylinder, all-wheel-drive Lexus GS, its 2007 6-cylinder Toyota Camry (a North-American-made product), and its 2007 8-cylinder, 4-wheel-drive Toyota Tundra (also a North-American-made product).

In 2007, both Toyota Motor Corporation and the Subaru division of Fuji Heavy Industries, Ltd. had no entries on CR's Used-Cars-To-Avoid list. In 2008, only Subaru has no entries.

For reference, the charts of the manufacturers' shares of entries on the 2007, 2006 and 2005 Used-Cars-To-Avoid lists are shown below.

The next chart depicts GM's recent history of shares on the annual Used-Cars-To-Avoid lists.

Finally, we examine the manufacturer shares of CR's Used Cars to Avoid for the 5 most-recent model years, 2003 to 2007, mainly to ascertain whether there is any evidence of improvement in quality of the motor vehicles sold by General Motors Corporation.

Comparing this chart with the first chart, we see that General Motors' share of CR's Used Cars to Avoid for the past 5 model years (40.6%) is nearly identical to its share for the past 10 model years (41.4%). This suggests that GM has improved the quality of its products very little, or not at all.
