	AutoOnInfo.net  March 2008 Chevrolet Upholds and Expands a Tradition in Infamy: GM's Chevrolet Line Worst by CR's 2008 Used Cars to Avoid By James B. Bleeker General Motors Corporation's Chevrolet line had more entries on Consumer Reports' 2008 Used-Cars-to-Avoid list than any other line, again by quite a margin. This rather, or quite, notorious motor vehicle line obtained 106 entries on this list; the second-worst automobile line had only 62 entries. This gave it a lead of 47 entries over the second worst. In 2007, GM's Chevrolet line had 100 entries on this ignominious list and the second-worst line had 62 entries. This gave it a 2007 lead of only 38. The following chart depicts the count of each line's number of entries on CR's 2007 Used-Cars-to-Avoid list, multiplied by -1 to reflect its negative character, for the 15 worst lines, which are 16 by tie.     To give an appreciation as to how bad the Chevrolet line is, we turn to the reliability tables in the Used-Car Reliability section of the April 2007 issue of Consumer Reports. In this section, the Chevrolet line has 19 reliability tables, reflecting a combination of the number of models in the Chevrolet line and the amount of data available for the line. We look at other lines with a similar number of reliability tables to see how bad, or truly awful, the Chevrolet line is. The contrasts are rather remarkable; the results appear in the following table. As the Oldsmobile (a defunct line of GM), Plymouth (a defunct line of Chrysler), Isuzu, Suzuki, and Mitsubishi lines had no reliability verdicts in CR's April issue, these lines are necessarily excluded from the comparison. In the count of GM's Pontiac reliability verdicts, the verdicts in the table devoted to a Toyota-engineered product is excluded. Again, each value is multiplied by -1 to reflect its negative character. The chart of the resulting 5 best lines and 15 worst lines appears below.     Note that nearly all of General Motors' current lines (its Saturn line, its Cadillac line, its Saab line, its Chevrolet line, its GMC line, its Hummer line, and its Pontiac line) are among the Worst 15. Also worth noting is that none of Ford's domestic lines nor its Volvo line is among the Worst 15. Finally, it should be mentioned that save for the several model years of the Honda Passport, a rebadged product by Isuzu Motors Ltd., Honda Motor Company's Honda line has no entries on CR's 2008 Used-Cars-to-Avoid list.
