January's Hottest-Selling Vehicles by WSJ's Lot-Stay Time: Toyota Garners Half of the Best-Selling Automobiles of January 2008

By James B. Bleeker

The Wall Street Journal reports that 7 of the 14 hottest-selling automobiles in the U.S. in January 2008 were motor vehicle models by Toyota Motor Corporation. These top 7 include 2 from the Toyota line - the Toyota Prius hatchback (with a lot stay time of 14 days) and the Toyota Highlander mid-size sport-utility vehicle (21 days) - and 5 from the Lexus line - the Lexus LX large sport-utility vehicle (8 days), the Lexus GX mid-size sport-utility vehicle (15 days), the Lexus ES sedan (23 days), the Lexus GS sedan (23 days), and the luxury flagship Lexus LS sedan (23 days).

The following table depicts Toyota's hottest-selling models for January 2008, by the Wall Street Journal's lot-stay time, together with their several-to-numerous quality distinctions and their 1999-2003 Reliability Percentrank average, as well as links to Auto on Info reviews of the 2007 vintage, where available.

To view a table providing Toyota's models on Consumer Reports' list of 2007 models having the highest predicted short-term reliability, go to "By CR's Predicted Short-Term Reliability for Model Year 2007, Toyota and Honda Dominate Best and GM, Ford and DaimlerChrysler Dominate Worst, per Detroit News Table," Auto on Info, November 2006.

From the table, it may be seen that one or more versions of the Toyota Prius, the Toyota Highlander, the Lexus LS, the Lexus GS, and the Lexus LX are on the list of the Best of 2008 by Consumer Reports' Reliability-Verdict history for the 5 most-recent model years.

The Toyota Prius has long been one of the hottest sellers. See "By WSJ's Lot-Stay Time, Made-in-Japan TMC Models Account for 7 of July's Hottest 10," AutoOnInfo.net, August 2006, "By WSJ's Lot-Stay Time, Made-in-Japan TMC Models Are Top 5 of Hottest 10," AutoOnInfo.net, January 2006, and "By WSJ's Lot Stay Time, Toyota Has 8 of Hottest 12," AutoOnInfo.net, August 2005.

The one other Reliable Two model on WSJ's January 2008 Hot-Off-the-Lot list is the Honda CR-V small sport-utility vehicle. Its quality distinctions are numerous as well: a CR 2006 comfort-versatility-and-snow-traction Quick Pick, a CR 2007 All-Around-Competence Quick Pick, a 2007 CR Top Pick runner-up, a CR 2007 Long-Run Pick, a recipient of CR's 2007 highest rating for predicted short-term reliability, a recipient of CR's 2007 second-highest rating for predicted short-term ownership satisfaction, a recipient of CR's 2007 second-highest accident avoidance rating by road test performance, a recipient of CR's 2007 highest crash protection rating, a best motor vehicle model by CR's 2007 Reliability Verdicts, a CR 2008 Good Bet, and a top ten by the 2007 Reliability Index.

With regard to the remaining hottest sellers, Nissan had one (the Nissan Rogue, a small SUV), Porsche had one (the Cayenne, a mid-size SUV), Mercedes-Benz had one, Audi had one, and GM had two, one of which (the Cadillac CTS) is on the list of the Worst of 2008, providing further evidence that while General Motors' managerial, engineering, and manufacturing personnel may have modest-to-negligible talent, its marketing folk are quite talented indeed, maybe talented enough to market arsenic as an aphrodisiac, at least to what remains of GM's customer base.
