January U.S. Safety Recalls by

January U.S. Safety Recalls by Volvo (2), Volkswagen (2), Mercedes-Benz (1), General Motors (1), Mitsubishi (1), and Nissan (1)

The following January 2008 U.S. safety recalls were published by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
By the Volvo division (with a 1999-2003 Reliability Percentrank average of .21) of Ford Motor Company:
(1) 1,900 2008 Volvo V70 and XC70 wagons equipped with rear integrated booster seats for failing to provide the warning label regarding child restraint systems required under Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 213.
(2) 23,000 2004-2006 Volvo S40 and V50 vehicles sold in or currently registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia for a pump electronic module that may corrode internally and cause the vehicle to stall and/or not to start. Note that this recall is one of the notorious regional recalls permitted by NHTSA and that it omits the states of Kentucky and Virginia (often included1), not to mention North Dakota and South Dakota (commonly excluded).
By Volkswagen AG (with a 1999-2003 Reliability Percentrank average of .21):
(3) 510 2008 Volkswagen New Beetle Special Edition Triple White Sedan vehicles for an adhesive that may fail to hold the roof spoiler onto the vehicle, a threat to pedestrians and other motorists.
(4) 96 2008 Volkswagen Touareg sport-utility vehicles for a fuel-supply-line connector that may be insufficiently sealed and may consequently leak fuel and cause a fire.
By the Mercedes-Benz division (with a 1999-2003 Reliability Percentrank average of .24) of Daimler AG:
(5) 9,004 2007 Mercedes E-Class, GL-Class, M-Class and R-Class vehicles equipped with a diesel engine for a crankshaft sensor that may fail, cause loss of power, and prevent the vehicle from restarting.
By General Motors Corporation (with a 1999-2003 Reliability Percentrank average of .31):
(6) 181,516 2006-2008 Chevrolet HHR wagons for interior materials that fail to provide the occupant protection required under Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 201.
By Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (with a 1999-2003 Reliability Percentrank average of .70):
(7) 7,340 2006-2007 Mitsubishi Endeavor sport-utility vehicles for a right-side lower seat-belt anchor that may fail to hold.
By Nissan Motor Company (with a 1999-2003 Reliability Percentrank average of .70):
(8) 5,523 2008 Nissan Titan and Frontier pickup trucks and Nissan Xterra sport-utility vehicles for a tire placard that lists an incorrect vehicle weight.

Addendum: Although AutoOnInfo.net covers only cars, SUVs, minivans, sport-utility vehicles, and pickup trucks, NHTSA's Monthly Recall Reports web page covers motorcycles, large trucks, trailers, travel trailers, school buses, city buses, and motor homes, as well as an assortment of vehicle add-ons, accessories, and components. Consequently, concerned parents may wish to regularly visit NHTSA's monthly recall reports to find out what school buses have been recalled and then enquire at their local bus companies to find out whether the repairs have been made or when they will be made.
