	AutoOnInfo.net  January 2008 By CR's 10-Year Reliability-Verdict History, Hyundai Clobbers GM Once Again: Is General Motors in Overdrive to Become the World's Worst Automobile Manufacturer? By James B. Bleeker By Consumer Reports' Reliability-Verdict history for model years 1998 to 2007, Hyundai Motor Company dramatically distanced itself from General Motors Corporation. Of Hyundai's 54 used-car reliability verdicts for this period, 14.8% were much better than average, 31.5% were better than average, 37.0% were average, 13.0% were below average, and only 3.7% were much below average. By contrast, of General Motors Corporation's 579 used-car reliability verdicts (for all of its models save those from its Saab line and the two engineered by Toyota), only 0.3% were much better than average, only 10.2% were better than average, and 45.1% were average, but 19.7% were worse than average and a whopping 24.7% were much worse than average. If the Saab line is included in the count, of GM's 604 used-car reliability verdicts, only 0.5% were much better than average, only 9.8% were better than average, and 45.2% were average, but 20.0% were worse than average and a whopping 24.5% were much worse than average. The following charts help depict the reliability profiles of Hyundai Motor Company and General Motors Corporation. Hyundai Motor Company's 2008 Reliability Profile General Motors Corporation's 2008 Reliability Profile Included in the computation of the above percentage shares are the models from the Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Hummer, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Saab, and Saturn lines that provided the necessary data, save that the used-car reliability verdicts for the two models that were engineered by Toyota Motor Corporation and have been marketed by General Motors are omitted from the computation. Although the divide between the reliability of products by Hyundai and that of products by GM is considerable, the reliability of products of both fall quite short of the reliability of products by Toyota Motor Corporation and Honda Motor Company. For contrast, the charts of the 2008 reliability profiles of the Reliable Two appear below. Toyota Motor Corporation's 2008 Reliability Profile Honda Motor Company's 2008 Reliability Profile Not included in the computation of the above percentage shares are the reliability verdicts of the Honda Passport, a rebadged product by Isuzu Motors Ltd., a former affiliate of General Motors. After Honda engineered its own sport-utility vehicle, it dumped the Passport. To help consumers in understanding what they might anticipate from the Hyundai line and each of GM's vehicle lines, as well as each vehicle line of the Reliable Two, we compute a Reliability Measure for each line by (1) multiplying the number of each line's model-years receiving CR's worst reliability verdict by -1, the number of each line's model-years receiving CR's second-worst reliability verdict by -.5, the number of each line's model-years receiving CR's average verdict by 0, the number of each line's model-years receiving CR's second-best reliability verdict by +.5, and the number of each line's model-years receiving CR's best reliability verdict by +1, (2) adding the values obtained together, and (3) dividing the sum by the total number of reliability verdicts for the line. This gives a Reliability Measure for each line that ranges from a possible -1 (lowest possible score) to a possible +1 (highest possible score). The following chart depicts these Reliability Measures for the Hyundai line, GM's Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Hummer, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Saab, and Saturn lines, Toyota's Lexus, Toyota, and Scion lines, and Honda's Acura and Honda lines. From the chart we see not a single line of General Motors with a Reliability Measure greater than 0, a quite sizable gap from the Reliability Measure of GM's best line to that of the Hyundai line, and a much greater gap from the Reliability Measure of GM's best line to the Reliability Measure of the Reliable Two's worst line.
