Bleeker For the year ending December 31, 2006, Australian consumers had cut General Motors Corporation's share of their automobile market to .154, or 15.4%, from .194, or 19.4%, for calendar year 1998. By contrast, Mexican consumers had cut GM's market share to .208 (from .263 in 1998), U.S. consumers had cut GM's market share to .242 (from .288 in 1998), and Canadian consumers had cut GM's market share to .253 (from .300 in 1998). This puts the Australians in clear lead in the race to quality and out of GM products. The following chart depicts the gap between the Reliability Percentrank averages of Toyota Motor Corporation and those of General Motors Corporation. Auto on Info estimates GM's final share of any given national automobile market, after repetitive behavioral responses and defensive reactions fade, to be about .04, or 4%. Consequently, there remains quite some distance to the finishing line. And the Mexicans are closing fast the lead held by the Australians and should be the first to cross the finishing line. Below are the extrapolations (linear regressions of degree one) of GM's automobile market shares for 1998 through 2006, for Mexico, Australia, Canada, and the U.S. On each chart, the red line, with a Market Share value (y-value) of .04, denotes the finishing line. From the charts, if the current pace is maintained, the Mexicans should cross the finishing line in about 2030, the Australians - in about 2038, the Canadians - in about 2048, and in last place, the Americans - in about 2052.
