Bleeker Of the 6 brands that scored best by Consumer Reports' recently released short-term reliability predictions for model year 2008, Toyota Motor Corporation accounts for 3 -Scion, Toyota and Lexus - and Honda Motor Company accounts for 2 - Honda and Acura. Fuji Heavy Industries, Ltd.'s Subaru nameplate is the remaining brand within the 6 best. Nissan's Infiniti brand placed 7th and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation's Mitsubishi brand placed 8th. The following table provides the ranks of the Top 8, by CR's short-term reliability measure. Table I: The Top 8 Automobile Lines by CR's Predicted Short-Term Reliability Scores for Model Year 2008 Rank Brand 1 Honda's Honda 2 Honda's Acura 3 Toyota's Scion 4 Fuji's Subaru 5 Toyota's Toyota 6 Toyota's Lexus 7 Nissan's Infiniti 8 Mitsubishi's Mitsubishi The rankings of Toyota Motor Corporation's three lines are down a bit from those of previous years, continuing a trend of recent years. This is likely a consequence of three factors: (1) Increased North American production, (2) Plant location in North America based on political considerations, and (3) Rapidly increasing global demand for Toyota's high quality products. The last has placed considerable strain on existing talent, especially on TSM masters. Nonetheless, CR's short-term reliability rankings may well be a modest-to-poor predictor of rankings for intermediate-term reliability, long-term reliability, and durability - all of which Toyota has historically dominated or co-dominated with Honda. At this stage, it is impossible to predict, with any measure of accuracy, which Toyota or Honda brand will be the most reliable after the model year 2008 vehicles have been on the road for 5 to 10 years, although it may be said with near certainty that the most reliable brand at each of the ages will be a Toyota or Honda brand or Nissan's Infiniti brand. (See Table II-MVRP.) The domain of General Motors Corporation spans the depths of the reliability pit. The following table provides the ranks of the worst 13 by CR's short-term reliability scores, with the worst first. Table I: The Worst 13 Automobile Lines by CR's Predicted Short-Term Reliability Scores for Model Year 2008, in Ascending Order of Reliability Score (Worst on Top) Rank Brand 36 Ford's Land Rover 35 GM's Hummer 34 GM's Cadillac 33 Daimler's Mercedes-Benz 32 GM's Pontiac 31 VW's Volkswagen 30 GM's Chevrolet 29 Chrysler's Jeep 28 GM's GMC 27 Suzuki's Suzuki 26 Chrysler's Dodge 25 GM's Saab 24 GM's Saturn From the table, it may be seen that General Motors Corporation's brands have 7 of the worst 13 predicted reliability scores for model year 2008. For model year 2007, GM's brands had only 4 of the worst 13. GM vehicle owners may wish to notify General Motors' executives and directors that this is not an improvement, lest they may think otherwise. General Motors' dominance of this year's worst 13 is a continuation of a long history of worst-list dominance. CR's predicted short-term reliability score of an automobile marque is the average of CR's predicted short-term reliability scores of the  models bearing the marque (and offering the necessary data). CR's predicted short-term reliability score of the current model year's edition of a model is based on the model's infrequency of serious problems within the 3 most-recent model years, if the model has not been refreshed within the past 3 model years; otherwise, CR's predicted short-term reliability score of the current model year's edition of a model is based on the model's infrequency of serious problems within the 2 most-recent model years or the most-recent model year, depending on the model year of refreshment. If the current model year is the year of refreshment, no reliability score exists for the model. A model year generally runs from about mid-September of one year to mid-September of the next. To help visualize how significantly CR's predicted short-term reliability scores of automobile marques have changed from model year 2007 to model year 2008 and where on the quality spectrum changes have occurred, each year's scores are placed on a scale from 0 to 1 and the corresponding values are plotted in the following chart. Not easily seen from the chart is that the Top 6 remain the Top 6 (found in the upper right-hand corner), but for much of the rest there is shifting hither and thither.
