Auto on Info  May 2007 DaimlerChrysler Jettisons Chrysler; Cerberus Does Salvage; Where to from Here? By James B. Bleeker Cerberus Capital Management LP has agreed to take Chrysler off DaimlerChrysler AG's hands, provided DaimlerChrysler pays it a few hundred million to do it. More precisely, DaimlerChrysler will cover the anticipated negative cash flow at Chrysler until the deal closes in the third quarter of this year, with the end result that DaimlerChrysler will likely be paying Cerberus several hundred million dollars to take over Chrysler. When the deal consummates, DaimlerChrysler, then to be Daimler AG, will hold a 19.9% interest in Chrysler, then to be Chrysler Holding LLC. In 1998, Daimler-Benz AG merged with Chrysler Corporation at a cost to Daimler-Benz of $36 billion. Rather shortly thereafter, accusations were made that Daimler-Benz had been mislead regarding the financial condition of Chrysler; however, by 1998 the consumer shift toward quality and out of Big Three products should have been evident, as the following charts depict. With regard to Chrysler's future, two things seem safely said. 1. Cerberus is in business not to tread water, but to make money. In practice, this should set Chrysler apart from the remaining two of the Big Three. In detail, this likely means that 50% of its North American manufacturing facilities should close within the next 7 years and most of the remaining 50% - within the decade that follows. 2. As the automotive industry can likely sustain no more than two manufacturers of high-reliability, high-durability motor vehicles, Chrysler's Chinese suppliers will likely strive hard to substantially exceed GM quality, but only marginally exceed Hyundai quality and never approach Toyota or Honda quality. This should be sufficient for Chrysler to hold on to at least a 6% share of the U.S. new car market for the next two decades, likely enough to meet downsized pension and health-care obligations and provide an adequate return on investment for the Cerberus partnership.
