NHTSA Investigates SUVs: GM's Corroding Fuel Pump Modules and Leaks and Ford's Failing Drive Shafts or Axle Differentials

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating 2002-2003 GMC Envoys and Chevrolet TrailBlazers because of reported corrosion of fuel pump modules and resulting fuel leaks. NHTSA states the number of reported complaints of fuel leakage to be 16.
While a concern to owners, this may merely reflect General Motors Corporation's usual and customary rate of dilapidation. The following chart suggests that a GM sport-utility vehicle at age 2-to-4 years may be approximately equivalent, with regard to needed repairs, to a Toyota Motor Corporation sport-utility vehicle at age 21-to-23 years.
And as it seems possible that one might find sixteen 1985 Toyota sport-utility vehicles with fuel leaks, there arises the question: Is a corroding fuel pump module and resulting fuel leak in a 2002 or 2003 GM SUV a basis for recall or merely buyer-assumed risk? This gives NHTSA a little something to grapple with?
NHTSA is also investigating Ford Motor Company's 2002-2004 Range Rovers and New Range Rovers for a drive shaft or axle differential that may fail. NHTSA states that it has received 38 complaints of such, a more sizable number considering how few of the models were sold in the U.S.
