CR's Top 3 Small SUVs Are Reliable Twos

The Consumer Reports' top three 2007 sport-utility vehicles, by road-test performance, are products of the Reliable Two - the V6 Toyota RAV4 Limited, the 4-cylinder Toyota RAV4 Base, and the Honda CR-V Ex. All three also (1) have a CR-predicted short-term reliability in its highest category and (2) are assessed by CR as having performed especially well in both (a) tests by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and (b) CR's accident avoidance tests. In addition, the CR-V and RAV4 have excellent 1998-2002 Reliability Percentrank averages - .97 and .94, respectively, giving both models a 1998-2002 Reliability Grade (per the high standards) of A.

CR's Best SUVs by Road Test Toyota RAV4 Honda CR-V The above photos are of the 2007 models and the above links are to on-site review pages of the 2006 models. The 2007 sport-utility vehicle that placed fourth by road-test performance is the Subaru Forester 2.5 X. It too (1) has a CR-predicted short-term reliability in its highest category and (2) is assessed by CR as having performed especially well in both (a) tests by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and (b) CR's accident avoidance tests. However, its 1998-2002 Reliability Percentrank average is only .77, giving it a 1998-2002 Reliability Grade of C.
All of the above four SUVs are CR All-Around Competence Quick Picks.
The 2007 V6 Hyundai Tucson GLS, fifth by road-test score, is the one other small SUV to be a CR All-Around Competence Quick Pick; however, it (1) has a CR-predicted short-term reliability in its second-highest category and (2) is not assessed by CR as having performed especially well in both (a) tests by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and (b) CR's accident avoidance tests. The Tucson is too new to have a 1998-2002 Reliability Percentrank average, but Hyundai's overall 1998-2002 Reliability Percentrank average is only .41, very much below Toyota's .90 and Honda's .88.
The 2007 Honda Element is the only other small SUV to have a CR-predicted short-term reliability in its highest category. However, it (1) is not a CR All-Around Competence Quick Pick and (2) is not assessed by CR as having performed especially well in both (a) tests by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and (b) CR's accident avoidance tests. The Element is too new to have a 1998-2002 Reliability Percentrank average.
The 2007 Nissan Xterra, ninth by road-test score, is a CR Off-Roading and Towing Quick Pick with a CR-predicted short-term reliability in its second-highest category; however, its 1998-2002 Reliability Percentrank average is only .52 and it is not assessed by CR as having performed especially well in both (a) tests by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and (b) CR's accident avoidance tests.
No small sport-utility vehicle by the Big Three - General Motors, Ford Motor, and the Chrysler Group of DaimlerChrysler - is a CR 2007 Quick Pick in any category.
