Filling the Quota at the Consumer's Expense? How CR's 1998 GM Recommendations Fared

In the April 1998 issue of Consumer Reports, the magazine recommended the following vehicles by General Motors Corporation - the Chevrolet Cavalier, the Chevrolet Lumina, the Chevrolet Malibu, the Oldsmobile Cutlass, the Pontiac Bonneville, the Pontiac Grand Prix, the Pontiac Sunfire, and the Saturn SC, a total of 8 out of 45, or 18%. No Buick, no Cadillac, and no GMC were recommended.
With so few GM vehicles recommended, one might suspect that the models chosen might be sort of average, or at least not awful.
Well, by the time the above models were 1-to-2 years old, one model was rated as having above average reliability, two were rated as having average reliability, and five were rated as having below average reliability, i.e., as used cars to avoid. By age 6-to-7 years, two were rated as having average reliability, three were rated as having below average reliability (used cars to avoid), and three no longer provided enough subscriber responses to offer up a reliability rating. By age 7-to-8 years, one was rated average, three were rated below average, and four no longer provided enough consumer responses to offer up a reliability rating.
The following chart depicts the reliability of the recommended GM models, as a group, and GM's overall reliability. For reference, the Reliability Score averages of Toyota Motor Corporation, and their extrapolation, are provided as well.
As may be seen from the chart, GM's CR-recommended models differed little from GM's overall lot.
The Consumers Union of U.S., Inc., publisher of Consumer Reports, is a U.S.-based corporation, as is General Motors Corporation; thus, the prudent consumer may wish to exercise circumspection when viewing a CR recommendation of a GM product.
