NHTSA Safety Investigations: More Seat Fires for Chrysler and More Engine Compartment Fires for Ford, Plus Summary and Others

The Detroit Free Press provided the following tally of safety investigations by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as of August 21, 2006.
NHTSA Safety Investigation Tally, by Manufacturer, as of 21 August 2006 Manufacturer Total Chrysler Group of DaimlerChrysler AG 12 General Motors Corporation 6 Ford Motor Company 4 Toyota Motor Corporation 4 Volkswagen AG 2 Volvo division of Ford Motor Company 2 Land Rover division of Ford Motor Company 1 Kia Motors Corporation 1 Mitsubishi Motors Corporation 1 Suzuki Motor Corporation 1 Porsche AG 1 The newspaper reported that of NHTSA's 12 outstanding safety investigations of Chrysler products, 9 were at the "engineering analysis" level, the highest level.
Investigations and upgrades of investigations announced in the past several months include:
Regarding the Chrysler Group:
118,000 2001-2003 Dodge Durango sport-utility vehicles for driver seat fires. Six of the fires were reported to have occurred when the ignition switch was off.
131,000 2005-2006 Chrysler Pacificas for engine stalling possibly from a computer software glitch.
17,000 2005 Chrysler Pacificas for engine stalling possibly from defective fuel pumps.
248,095 2002-2003 Dodge Neons for headlight failure and smoke from or near the steering column.
Regarding Toyota Motor Corporation:
72,000 Scion tCs for moonroof-glass shattering, possibly from flying road debris.
393,313 2004-2005 Toyota Sienna minivans for liftgate suspension failure, possibly due to seal damage and consequent leakage.
219,522 2003-2004 Toyota Tundra pickups for excessive wear of a front suspension part.

Regarding Ford Motor Company:
600,000 2001-2003 Ford Escape and Mazda Tribute sport-utility vehicle engine compartment fires in the vicinity of the vehicle's antilock braking system.
