Site Manager's 1984 Corolla Passes 500,000 Mark

On October 5, 2006, site manager's 1984 Toyota Corolla passed the 500,000-mile mark at the outskirts of Fergus Falls, Minnesota.
Despite its age and mileage, it has had few significant replacements. The notable exceptions are the radiator - replaced with a new Toyota radiator at slightly over 290,000 miles - and the transmission - replaced with a used Corolla transmission at about 479,000 miles.
In addition, the vehicle has been very trouble-free. The one notable exception occurred in the fall of 1997 when 3 to 5 hoses or end seals sprung leaks, after higher-mileage, higher-velocity trips. While the total cost of repairing the leaks was rather negligible, each left a stain on site manager's garage floor (quite an irritation to site manager), and the several repairs coupled with the then recent radiator replacement caused site manager to wonder whether the vehicle was nearing its end. But, not so. Since then, few leaks (and possibly only one) have occurred.
Furthermore, the replaceables - water pumps, brake pads, and struts and strut cartridges - appear to have improved rather considerably over the years, especially the first two. Site manager can no longer recall when the last water-pump replacement and brake-pad replacement occurred, while in earlier years such replacements occurred within 120,000 miles, making recall easy.
With regard to rust control in Toyota vehicles of the 1980s and earlier, the important principle is to find a bright, conscientious auto body technician, a task that may not be easy, especially in larger metropolitan areas. Repair by such a person should leave the part rust-free 2 to 3 times longer than when the part was new, rendering the cost of rust control rather negligible.
Nonetheless, the vehicle is aging. Based on current decline in operating performance, site manager suspects that his 1984 Corolla will expire sometime before it attains 750,000 miles. As an aid to helping readers who own a made-in-Japan Corolla of a similar vintage estimate their car's life expectancy, site manager's Corolla has weathered Minnesota winters and summers for all of its existence and site manager would term his driving style as moderately abusive (but site manager's father, when alive, might have assessed it closer to outrageously abusive, as might his wife now).
Separately, the 1983 Toyota Celica in Auto on Info's 500,000-to-1,000,000-mile Toyota gallery is reported to have expired at 571,913 miles. The epitaph provided reads:
"Car officially retired and scrapped due to head gasket problems. This was the first (and last) mechanical problem in 23 years. It never left me stranded. Thank you Toyota."
