U.S. Safety Recalls by General Motors, Chrysler, Nissan, Honda, and Toyota

The following U.S. safety recalls have been announced within the past two months.
By General Motors Corporation:
(1) An unspecified number of 2004-2006 Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, and Isuzu I-280 and I-350 pickup trucks for brake lamps that may stop functioning and cruise control that may become inoperative. The Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, and Isuzu I-280 and I-350 have a Consumer Reports 2006 predicted short-term reliability in the lowest category and the 4-wheel-drive Colorado and Canyon have a CR multi-year reliability rating of much worse than average.
By the Chrysler Group of DaimlerChrysler AG:
(2) 131,500 (per the Associated Press, 146,195 per Edmunds) 2000-2002 4.0-liter Jeep Grand Cherokee sport-utility vehicles for a fan blade that may separate and break through a cover. The 4-wheel-drive Jeep Grand Cherokee has a CR multi-year reliability rating of much worse than average.
(3) 111,600 (per Bloomberg News, 111,700 per AFP) 2003-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee sport-utility vehicles for front seats that may catch fire from its seat warmers. Chrysler reported 32 fires and 15 injuries from its seat warmers. The 4-wheel-drive Jeep Grand Cherokee has a CR multi-year reliability rating of much worse than average.
(4) 832,500 2002-2006 Jeep Liberty sport-utility vehicles for a ball joint that may separate and cause the vehicle's body to rest on its front tires and make steering challenging. The 6-cylinder Jeep Liberty has a CR reliability rating, over its rather short history, of average.
By Nissan Motor Company:
(5) 96,800 2006 2.5-liter, 4-cylinder Nissan Altima and Sentra sedans for excessive oil consumption due to improper performance of the piston rings and possible engine damage and fires. The Altima has a CR 2006 predicted short-term reliability of average and the Sentra has a CR 2006 predicted short-term reliability of above average.
(6) 200,866 2003 2.5-liter, 4-cylinder Nissan Altima and Sentra sedans for a sensor that may fail and cause the engine to stop. The Altima has a CR multi-year reliability rating of average and the Sentra - above average.
By Honda Motor Company:
(7) Less than 78,409 (the recall total for the United States, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Thailand, and several European countries) 1995-1997 Honda Odyssey minivans and Honda CR-V sport-utility vehicles for engine parts that may overheat and may cause stopping and burns on the driver's feet (if melting occurs). The Honda Odyssey has a CR multi-year reliability of only average, something hoped for and sought after by the Big Three, but rather a disaster for a Honda-engineered product. The CR-V has a CR multi-year reliability of much better than average (CR's highest rating).
By Toyota Motor Corporation:
(8) 367,594 2004-2006 Lexus RX330, Lexus RX400h, Toyota Highlander, and Toyota Highlander hybrid sport-utility vehicles for a carpet cover clip that may obstruct use of the accelerator pedal. The Lexus 2006 RX330/RX400h has a CR predicted short-term reliability of above average (CR's second-highest) and the 2006 Toyota Highlander has CR's highest predicted short-term reliability.
(9) 24,490 2001 Toyota Echos and 8,476 2001 Toyota Priuses for a faulty engine part that may lead to an oil leak and engine stopping and damage.
(10) 156,555 2003-2005 Toyota Tundra pickups to deactivate a front-seat air bag cut-off switch. By NHTSA ruling, such a cut-off switch requires a particular child seat anchoring system, which the front seats lack.
(11) 9,400 2006 Toyota FJ Cruiser sport-utility vehicles for bad Bridgestone or Dunlop tires that may bulge on the sides and cause an air leak.
