GM Truck Owners Hot under the Collar over Salt on the Casing: The Runaway Saga Continues

In November 2004, General Motors Corporation agreed to recall, in the Canadian provinces of Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland, and Labrador, the 1999-2002 Chevrolet Avalanche, Chevrolet Suburban, Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon, and GMC Yukon XL sport utility vehicles and Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks, because of their disposition not to stop when the brake pedal is pushed. This perverse stubbornness arises, per Detroit News, when salt corrodes the bearing case, the corrosion pushes the braking sensor farther from the bearing case surface (which the sensor reads), the increased distance causes the sensor to send a false "lock" reading to the ABS system's computer, the computer reduces braking pressure, and as a result, stopping distance increases (by a factor of two or three1).
Apparently, not wanting to be outdone by its own vehicles, GM delayed a U.S. recall until September 2005 and then issued only a regional recall of the vehicles covering 20 states - Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and Missouri. And the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration let them get by with it. (Is flunking a basic reasoning skills test a job requirement at NHTSA?)
Well, the regional recall perturbed Wisconsin's Attorney General Peggy Lautenschlager, who wrote a letter in November 2005 to NHTSA objecting to the exclusion of Wisconsin and urging a national recall. In December 2005, the recall was extended to Delaware, Maryland, the District of Columbia, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and Missouri. However, the GM saga of runaways seems likely to be one that will live long, cause much grief, and fill many volumes. In a February Detroit News article entitled "Limited Recall Riles GM Owners," Kevin Vagt of Alexandria, Virginia is reported to be quite upset over the fact that he had to pay a $898 repair bill to get his GM ABS system working properly, especially as Maryland is only two miles away. He said, "I'm beside myself." And Connie Wagenaar-Henning of South Dakota can't understand why South Dakota was excluded from the cold-weather states. She said, "Normally, this time of the year (February), it's 40 below. These trucks are all over the place, and we're all having problems." And Ryan Sigman of Ohio said that he was told that his vehicle had the wrong vehicle identification number and would have to pay for the repair himself. And Richard Lopez Sr. of California reported having numerous brake failure incidents causing several minor accidents (so the ocean may provide the salt needed to be part of this North American epic). He said, "At this point, I just want to give the truck back."
And so the saga continues ...
