Rollovers of Ford Trucks Bring Three Multi-Million Dollar Judgments; Ford Door Latches Prompt Another Lawsuit
By James B. Bleeker
In an action involving a 2000 Ford Explorer sport utility vehicle rollover, crumpled roof, and shattered windows, a jury awarded $3.95 million in actual damages. Plaintiffs noted that Ford Motor Company (1) sold the SUV with larger tires that increased the likelihood of a flip, (2) chose to use roofs weaker than what it may have, and (3) chose not to use laminated (plastic-sandwiched-by-glass) windows that may have prevented shattering.
In an action involving a Ford F-150 pickup truck rollover and collapsed roof, a jury awarded the plaintiffs $30.4 million. The attorney for the plaintiffs said, "Ford should treat its customers like prized possessions; instead, it treats them like lab rats."1 Ford spokeswoman Kathleen Vokes said, "This is another tragic reminder that seat belts can help save lives only when they are worn."1 Sean Kane, president of SRS, Inc., a safety research firm, said, "Jurors are finding that manufacturers have done little or nothing to protect occupants from rollovers."1
In an action involving a Ford Expedition SUV rollover, a jury awarded the plaintiffs $42 million.
In its rollover lawsuits, Ford so far has won more than it has lost, but losing can be pricey. In one case the jury award was $369 million.
In a recently filed case involving a Ford rollover, a 17-year-old girl was crushed under a F-150 pickup truck. The plaintiffs are alleging weak door latches that permitted the driver's door to pop open and the driver to be crushed under the pickup. A Yahoo! search of the phrase Ford door latches will pull up an eyeful.
