Insufficiently Sealed Exterior Airbag Sensors Prompt Odyssey Recall, Activated Side Airbag Sensor Light Causes Accord Probe, Sticking Door Handles Cause Touareg Probe, Rapid Deceleration, Stalling, and Loss of Power Steering Cause Volvo Probe
Honda Motor Company is recalling 85,154 2005 Odyssey minivans to replace external impact sensors that activate the frontal airbag system. The external sensors are reported to have been insufficiently sealed, with the consequence that salt enters and corrosion occurs.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating owner complaints that the passenger side air bag panel light of the 2000 and 2001 Honda Accord has lit up for reasons not apparent. An "on" panel light indicates that the passenger side airbag has been deactivated. Deactivation is programmed to occur under a variety of circumstances when engagement might endanger the passenger. For example, if the passenger seat occupant is small and close to the door, deactivation is programmed. Honda reports that many of the deactivations were prompted by a briefcase or computer bag in the passenger seat.
NHTSA is investigating the exterior door handles of the 2004-2005 Volkswagen Touareg, as they may stick in the open position with the consequence that the door may fly open while the vehicle is in motion. The Associated Press reports that Volkswagen has already issued a technical service bulletin on the problem.
NHTSA is investigating 266,000 1999-2001 C70, S60, S80, V70, and V70XC Volvos and also an unspecified number of 1999-2000 S70 Volvos for complaints of rapid deceleration, engine stalling, and loss of power steering. The investigation is focused on the electronic throttle.
