Prius Has Stalling Glitch, NHTSA Commences Investigation
By James B. Bleeker
Toyota Motor Corporation's current gasoline-electric hybrid, the 2004-2005 Prius, has a stalling glitch. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports receiving 33 complaints alleging sudden stalling, with 85% of the complaints indicating that the vehicle stalled at a velocity between 35 miles per hour (about 58 kilometers per hour) and 65 miles per hour (about 108 kilometers per hour). About half of the complainants reported an inability to restart the car after it stalled. If successfully restarted, some, or all, reported forced reliance on the electric motor and battery power. Toyota has said that it believes the problem to be a software glitch.
K.G. Duleep, managing director of Energy and Environmental Analysis, Inc. was quoted by the Detroit Free Press as saying, "Toyota has a reputation for bulletproof engineering. If there are any problems, they will act quickly to take care of it."1
Continued popularity of the Prius may require it.
Sales of the Prius may be small relative to those of the Camry and Corolla (see "In the U.S. in May 2005, Sales Shift Toward Quality Continues," Auto on Info, June 2005), but Toyota Motor Corporation has plans to expand the use of the hybrid technology into several of its existing models and has expressed the thought that eventually all, or nearly all, of its model offerings may have a hybrid version.
