Does 'GM' Mean 'Junk'?

Today, it may. GM's Reliability Index Average relative to that of Toyota over the Index's eleven-year history is arguably damning.
However, even more indicative may be the change in the number of GM models for which there was a sufficient number of responding owners to permit the computation of a Reliability Index value. For model years 1987-1988, there were 41 such models, but by 1997-1998, there were only 29. The following chart depicts and projects the decline; the years given are the years of survey that provided the data.
By contrast, the number of Ford models providing Reliability Index Values declined by only 2 over the same period, and the number of Chrysler models, by one. This suggests that a sizable and growing portion of the knowledgeable consumers who subscribe to Consumer Reports, whose tables provide the data from which the Index values are computed, view GM products as things to avoid, or what people commonly call junk.
In keeping with the trend of things, but also with the spin of the times, site manager proposes the following definition:
GM (circa 2005): an ironic abbreviation of gem <the collapsing roof was a
of a job>
