Toyota and Honda Dominate Consumer Reports 2005 Overall Quick Pick List; Big Three Score Zip
By James B. Bleeker
Toyota Motor Corporation garnered 7 spots, or 33% of the entries, on Consumer Reports' overall Quick Pick list. Three models are from the Lexus line - the Lexus ES330 sedan, the Lexus IS300 (4-door hatchback or sedan), and the Lexus RX 330 mid-sized sport utility vehicle; four models are from the Toyota line - the Toyota 4Runner SR5 (V6) mid-sized sport utility vehicle, the Toyota Camry XLE (V6) family sedan, the Toyota Highlander Limited mid-sized sport utility vehicle, and the Toyota RAV4 small sport utility vehicle. Some photographs, with links, of these models appear below.

Honda Motor Company garnered 7 spots, or 33% of the entries, on CR's overall Quick Pick list. One entry is from the Acura line - the Acura TSX sedan; six entries are from the Honda line - the Honda Accord EX (V6) family sedan, the Honda Accord XE (4-cylinder) family sedan, the Honda Accord Hybrid family sedan, the Honda Civic EX small car, the Honda Civic Hybrid small car, and the Honda Pilot EX-L mid-sized sport utility vehicle. Some photographs, with links, of these models appear below.

Consumer Reports' criterion for this rather exclusive list is that the vehicle model or edition must have earned very good or excellent ratings in each of its five categories - predicted reliability (an average of one to three - depending on model change and data availability - of the model's three most recent model years' reliability scores), overall safety (accident avoidance capability and crash protection), owner satisfaction, fuel economy, and road performance. Note that if the consumer plans to own his or her vehicle for more than three years, it is likely prudent to review the vehicle's 1996-2000 Reliability Percentrank average found in Table I-MVRP.
The remaining seven models originally making the 2005 overall Quick Pick list are the Infiniti FX35 midsize sport utility vehicle, the Nissan Maxima 3.5 SE family sedan, the Nissan Murano SL midsize sport utility vehicle, the Subaru Impreza WRX sporty car, the Subaru Impreza WRX STi sporty car, the Subaru Forester 2.5X small sport utility vehicle, and the Mazda3 i small car. The Mazda3 has been pulled from Consumer Reports' recommended list because it earned a rating of "poor" in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's side-impact crash tests1; from CR's stated criterion for listing on the overall Quick Pick list, it would seem likely that CR has pulled it from this list as well.
By manufacturer, the entries are divided thusly:
Percentage of Original Entries on Consumer Reports 2005 Overall Quick Pick List, by Manufacturer Manufacturer Percentage Toyota 33% Honda 33% Subaru 14% Nissan 14% Mazda* 5% Big Three and all others 0% * Mazda's one entry, the Mazda3 i, may have been pulled from Consumer Reports' Overall Quick Pick List due to a "poor" side-impact crash test rating by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The Insurance Institute's rating did cause Consumer Reports to pull the Mazda3 from its recommended list.1 1 "11 of 13 Small Cars Tested Get Lowest Crash Rating," Detroit Free Press, March 7, 2005, http://www.freep.com/money/autonews/crash7e_20050307.htm and "Consumer Reports Pulls Focus As Pick," Detroit Free Press, March 8, 2005, http://www.freep.com/money/autonews/consumer8e_20050308.htm
