Consumer Reports Drops Ford Focus and A Bunch More from Its Recommended List Due to Poor Side-Impact Crash Test Results

Consumer Reports drops the Ford Focus small car, the Hyundai Elantra sedan, the Mazda3 sedan, the Nissan Altima sedan, the Honda Element sport utility vehicle, the Mitsubishi Outlander sport utility vehicle, and the Suzuki Grand Vitara/XL-7 sport utility vehicle from its recommended list due to an overall rating of Poor on the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's side-impact crash tests.
The Ford Focus is on AOI's reliability Worst of 2000 and Worst of 2001 and has been the subject of a number of recalls (see "Ford Safety Recalls Take Another Leap: Corroding Door Latches Prompt Recall of 358,857 Focus Cars," AOI, February 2005).
